Showing 10 towns
Acireale
CoastalA magnificent Baroque town perched on lava cliffs above the sea — cathedral, piazzas, and zero tourist crowds. Walk down to the tiny fishing hamlet of Santa Maria La Scala for waterfront seafood dinner. Perfect positioning between Taormina and Catania.
Aci Trezza / Aci Castello
CoastalDramatic black lava coastline with the famous Faraglioni dei Ciclopi (Cyclops Rocks) rising straight from the sea. Aci Castello adds a Norman castle perched on a lava outcrop. Stunning, highly photogenic, with excellent seafood.
Zafferana Etnea
EtnaSits at 600m on Etna's southeastern slopes — cooler air, forested trails, and views down to the Ionian coast. Known for honey, local wine, and lava hiking. A very different vibe from coastal towns.
Giardini Naxos
CoastalAt the base of Taormina's cliff — beach town on the site of Sicily's first Greek colony. Lots of hotels and easy access, but feels like Taormina's less glamorous beach annex. Best if you want a beach morning before Catania.
Riposto
CoastalA genuine working port town with a long waterfront promenade and local atmosphere. Not postcard-pretty but excellent seafood restaurants and solid hotels. Good midpoint option with easy highway access.
Fiumefreddo di Sicilia
CoastalSmall coastal town home to a rare nature reserve where freshwater springs meet the sea. Very low-key with almost no tourism — genuinely peaceful and unhurried. Limited lodging but deeply tranquil.
Milo
EtnaA tiny gem at 700m on Etna's eastern slope — vineyards, wildflowers, and sweeping Ionian Sea views from above. The closest Etna village to Taormina. Mostly B&Bs and agriturismos; deeply atmospheric.
Viagrande
EtnaA well-heeled village on Etna's southeast flank with stone palazzi, wine estates, and excellent agriturismos with pools. Zero tourists, authentic local vibe, and perfectly positioned between Etna and the coast.
Trecastagni
EtnaHigher on Etna's slopes amid chestnut forests with panoramic views down to the sea. Features a beautiful Norman church and good luxury villa rental options. Very residential and authentically Sicilian.
Sant'Alfio
EtnaHome to the Castagno dei Cento Cavalli — one of Europe's oldest and largest chestnut trees, estimated at 2,000–4,000 years old. Tiny, traditional, with a handful of agriturismos. Truly off the beaten path.
Good to Know
All times approximate by car. Etna slope towns are inland — allow extra time if driving coastal routes.
