🧓 Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle: Gentle Options for Seniors
Neuschwanstein Castle may sit atop a Bavarian hill, but elderly guests have scenic and manageable ways to reach it. Here’s what to know before you go:
🚍 Getting to the Castle
- Walking: A 40-minute uphill walk (1.5 km) from Hohenschwangau village. Paved path but steep incline—not ideal for limited mobility.
- The hiking trail to Neuschwanstein Castle (about 1.5 km) is paved and partly very steep, which is why we would recommend to use the horse carriage transport.
- Shuttle Bus: Drops guests near Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge). From there, it’s a gentle 10–15-minute downhill walk to the entrance.
- Horse-Drawn Carriage: A charming 20-minute ride stops roughly 15 minutes uphill walk from the gate. Final stretch may be challenging.
- Any regular-sized, foldable wheelchair can be stowed in the trunk at the back of the carriages.
- Please note, however, that the carriages do not have a ramp.
- It is necessary that the person who needs to be transported be able to get into the carriage by themselves or with the help of their companions.
- The carriages to Neuschwanstein Castle run all year round, however without a fixed schedule and depending on visitor demand.
