A passport is needed for international travel, with the exception of some “closed loop” cruises where it is still strongly advisable to have a passport not expiring within 6 months.

For domestic flights, you must present an acceptable form of ID, such as a passport or a state‑issued REAL ID. If you cannot provide one, you may pay a $45 fee to use TSA ConfirmID. TSA will then attempt to verify your identity so you can proceed through security, but verification is not guaranteed.

A passport card can be used for domestic flights as an acceptable form of ID. It’s also valid for land and sea travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean, but not for international air travel. Warning: If you have to fly home, the passport card is not valid for international flights.
