Istituto San Giuseppe is my pick if you want to wake up and simply stroll into the postcard. Nestled in Castello, just steps off the lovely Campo Santa Maria Formosa, this little convent puts you a mere 5-minute amble from Piazza San Marco and 10 minutes from the Rialto Bridge. Guests rave about the location again and again — you could visit the Doge’s Palace, the Basilica, and the Bridge of Sighs entirely on foot, without ever needing to flag down a vaporetto. For sightseeing efficiency, it simply can’t be beat.

Casa Vacanza Madonna Dell’Orto, on the other hand, is for the traveler who wants Venice to feel like a neighborhood, not a stage set. Tucked into Cannaregio near the church of its namesake, it’s quieter, more residential, and altogether more local. Yes, you’ll be commuting into the tourist heart of the city rather than living inside it — figure 17-20 minutes on foot to San Marco, or a quick hop from the nearby vaporetto stop. But you’re rewarded with a calmer home base and, by most accounts, a proper breakfast each morning — a little luxury the convent doesn’t offer.

My take: if your days are packed with sightseeing and you want to maximize footsteps toward monuments rather than toward your hotel, Istituto San Giuseppe is the smart booking. If you’d rather retreat each evening to someplace peaceful and authentically Venetian, Casa Vacanza Madonna Dell’Orto is worth the extra walk.
